Sam won four Ryder Cup trophies in all, captaining his team to victory over the Americans at The Belfry 17 years after sinking the winning putt at the same venue. He’s since signed up to the Seniors Tour, and helped his fellow panellists to the first ever perfect score on A Question of Sport.

Successfully captaining the European Ryder Cup team to victory at The Belfry, Sam also played in the contest eight times, and has a special affinity with the course, having holed the winning putt there in 1985. Only Sam and the great Seve Ballesteros can claim to have both captained a winning European team, and sunk the winning putt as well.

Sam became the first golfer in European history to notch up 600 tournament wins. As for other statistics from his 28 years on the circuit, he walked an estimated 14,000 miles and earned an average £1,600 per round - or £22 a stroke. Sam also has accumulated more European Tour titles without winning one of the four majors than any other player other than fellow Scot, Colin Montgomerie.

Sam now competes in the European Seniors Tour, finishing first in the Order of Merit on three separate occasions. Away from the course, he has appeared a number of times on BBC1’s A Question of Sport and has the honour of being on the only team (alongside Sharron Davies and team captain Phil Tufnell) to achieve a perfect score on the show.

Looking Ahead to International Women’s Day

Samira Ahmed, Eniola Aluko, and Alex Mahon

We were joined by four fantastic speakers to look ahead at International Women’s Day. With the theme of this year’s event being #InspireInclusion, we were lucky enough to hear from four women who have each blazed a trail in their respective fields: CEO of Channel 4, Alex Mahon; the former Australian Prime Minister and Chair of Kings’ Global Institute of Women’s Leadership, Julia Gillard; one of the leading voices in football, Eniola Aluko MBE; and broadcaster and journalist, Samira Ahmed.
