Before joining the presenting team of the agenda-setting Today programme, Emma took over Woman's Hour on its 75th anniversary. She fronted the radio institution for three years, leading the show in a more news-led direction. The Daily Telegraph’s first Digital Editor and former Women's Editor, Emma both presents and speaks with authority, humour and optimism about everything from business and technology to diversity and politics. Emma is a broadcaster, writer and journalist. She is one of the hosts of Radio 4's Today programme. Prior to joining the flagship news programme she fronted the radio institution that is Woman's Hour. The longest-running women's show in the world, and during her time becoming the most downloaded programme across the BBC, Emma also saw the show move into more directly news and politics-driven coverage.
Before joining Radio 4, Emma presented her own 5Live daily morning show, a mix of politics and current affairs, and has co-hosted The Pledge, Sky News’ weekly debate programme. She also presented Newsnight for three highly eventful political years.
Starting her journalism career first at Media Week and then at The Telegraph, Emma became the latter’s first digital editor. The role meant leading the paper’s coverage of all things tech, interviewing key industry figures and writing about the business aspects of the sector. She was a regular Telegraph columnist and was also their Women’s Editor and created the online Telegraph Wonder Women section. She has also been a columnist for the Sunday Times, and penned their Tough Love agony column.
On air, Emma has presented a number of shows on 5Live including Hit List, a run-down of the week’s biggest stories according to social media. She was a guest presenter of Woman's Hour before taking over full-time on the show's 75th anniversary, and has chaired their annual Woman’s Hour Power List. the military, religion, and America, and on TV she’s hosted BBC One’s Sunday Morning Live.
Emma has been named Speech Broadcaster of the Year at the Radio Academy Awards and Interviewer of the Year at the British Journalism Awards.
She entered the US TV market launching a weekly interview programme called Emma Barnett Meets... on Bloomberg. Each episode features a high-profile guest who sits down with Emma to share their vision.
She has also written Period: It's About Bloody Time, confronting taboos and busting myths about the female body. She is a patron of Smartworks, a charity which helps economically disadvantaged women secure jobs through interview training and having the right outfit to make the best first impression.
