Creating Sunshine
Gareth Malone is a choral director, musician and presenter of award winning show, The Choir.
After studying drama and then music at The Royal Acadamy of Music, Gareth’s love of choral singing lead him to be awarded the position of Edward Heath Assistant Animateur with the London Symphony Orchestra. Working with school projects and concerts, Gareth went on to run the LSO St Luke's Community and Youth Choirs.
He first took his job to TV presenting BBC2’s The Choir. The series saw Gareth take on the challenge of bringing music into the lives of students who had never sung before in the aim to compete with the very best in the World Choir Games in China.
The astounding success of the first series lead to The Choir: Boys Don't Sing, resulting in a second BAFTA and RTS awards. Gareth's third project, The Choir: Unsung Town, saw him attempting to unite the community of South Oxhey by setting up a choir. In The Choir: Military Wives, Gareth prepared a group of wives and partners of serving military personnel to perform at the Royal British Legion's Festival of Remembrance.
Since The Choir series, he has toured Britain's coastline discovering the songs of the sea, worked with a youth opera recruited from scratch, and been on a quest to engage 11-year-old boys with education. He’s also fronted a range of song and performance based programmes from Gareth Malone Goes to Glyndebourne to Never Mind the Buzzcocks. He has also explored why we sing for Radio 4, presented concerts for the Royal Opera House and The Proms and taught a choir of sportsmen for Sport Relief.
In the series Sing While You Work, Gareth formed choirs in various workplaces, a concept which he brings to the live stage.
