Biography

Originally an electronics engineer specialising in computing, Kate began her broadcast career on Tomorrow’s World. Her engineering background, her degree in physics from Oxford and her experience as a computer programmer came in useful during her time as a presenter on the BBC’s flagship science and technology programme.

Kate has also presented a weekly show on Radio 5Live, and ITV’s children’s science show Big Bang, as well as a series on engineering for the BBC Learning Zone. She has worked on educational programmes for the Open University and BBC Schools and presented Testing Times examining the challenges faced on major infrastructure projects.

Away from broadcasting Kate has served as President of Young Engineers, the National STEM Careers Co-ordinator for the Department of Children, Schools and Families, and sat on an advisory board of the Institute of Electrical Engineers. A Patron of WISE – Women into Science, Engineering and Construction, she was awarded a Women of Outstanding Achievement Award by the UK Research Council for her work in science, engineering and technology communication.

After a break to raise a family, study for a Masters in Electronic Communications Systems, and teach, Kate returned to the media co-presenting the BBC2 series The Museum of Life looking behind the scenes at the Natural History Museum.

As well as encouraging women and young people to work in technology, science and engineering, and working on STEM education, Kate also speaks more broadly about science and technology and developments in the fast moving sectors.
