Biography

Nadiya Hussain is a baker, columnist and television presenter, who rose to fame after winning the BBC’s sixth series of The Great British Bake Off.

The Bake Off winner learned basic cooking skills at school, teaching herself the rest using recipe books and YouTube videos. At the time of her appearance on Bake Off, she was a full-time mother studying for an Open University degree in Childhood and Youth Studies. Whilst appearing on the show, she baked 16 iced buns in three hours, put together a mille-feuille and created a show-stopping ‘My Big Fat British Wedding’ cake. The final was the most-watched show of 2015, with more than 15 million viewers.

Nadiya has since gone on to travel to Bangladesh to trace her culinary roots in The Chronicles of Nadiya, present The Big Family Cooking Showdown, and has written several cookery books in addition to her weekly column for The Times Magazine. She has been commissioned by Disney, the London Dungeon and Buckingham Palace to make an Alice Through the Looking Glass inspired cake, a Great Fire of London-themed loaf, and the Queen’s 90th birthday cake, respectively. Away from baking, she has also taken a personal, moving look at her own mental health in BBC2’s Nadiya: Anxiety And Me where she allowed cameras to observe her first course of therapy.
