Biography

James Rhodes is a classical pianist with a rock-star attitude and a truly distinctive approach to Bach and Beethoven. He has already topped the chart on iTunes and become the first to give a solo recital at the relaunched Roundhouse. He has also been picked out by The Times as ‘the one to watch.’

James' story is an unusual one. He has no formal musical education or dedicated mentoring. His early adult life was dogged with suffering; classical music became his solace and the key to his survival. It was Bach, Beethoven and Chopin that offered comfort.

While attending a concert by the Russian pianist Grigori Sokolov, he introduced himself to the piano masterclass maestro Bryce Morrison. The meeting was life-changing. James decided he was ready to bare his soul and put the ghosts of the past to rest. As a result he has been praised for his ability to ‘translate’ the classics without compromising his own spirit.
