Biography for Doc Brown

Once an underground rapper who worked with, among others De La Soul and Mark Ronson, Ben ‘Doc Brown’ Bailey Smith put down one mic and picked up another after working as ‘slang consultant’ on Lenny Henry’s Radio 4 sitcom, Rudy's Rare Records.

Encouraged by various BBC producers and writers (and Lenny himself), Doc played his first standup gig and within six months was at the Edinburgh Festival and in the final of the annual So You Think You’re Funny? competition.

Combining smart banter with comic raps, Doc covers everything from life and relationships to his previous job as a touring musician and various brushes with fame with charm and energy.

He has a host of notable television performances under his belt including a starring role in ITV’s Law & Order, C4’s The Inbetweeners and Derek, BBC thriller Hunted, BBC comedies Rev, Miranda, Russell Howard’s Good News, Live at the Apollo and ITV’s Midsomer Murders. He had a major role in the Ricky Gervais film David Brent: Life on the Road.

Doc also boasts a wide following amongst children, starring in and writing for the cult CBBC animation Strange Hill High, and creating and co-writing the BAFTA-winning Four O’Clock Club on CBBC. His children’s book, I Am Bear was an instant hit with critics and readers alike.
