Paddy O’Connell is familiar to Radio 4 listeners as the host of the Sunday morning look at and behind the headlines, Broadcasting House. He's also the co-host of the Newscast podcast, and a regular presenter of Newsnight.
Broadcasting House (or simply, BH) has a lighter approach than its weekday compatriot, Today. Thanks to Paddy’s characteristic humour and turn of phrase it attracts two million listeners to an exploration of the news that takes in the human, the hard-hitting, and the surprising. From geopolitics to social media, from international conflict to quirky tales and features the show strikes a remarkable and popular balance.
In an earlier life Paddy was a Wall Street hack and BBC North America Correspondent. He has interviewed the big names on Capitol Hill, played Xbox with Bill Gates, and found himself anchoring BBC coverage of 9/11 having narrowly missed being directly involved after running late for a meeting at the World Trade Center.
Paddy also asks many of the questions to guests and co-hosts Chris Mason, Laura Kuenssberg and Adam Fleming on the BBC's Newscast. He's a presenter on Newsnight, has co-hosted The One Show, and annually reports on Eurovision.
Paddy exudes wonderful optimism at a time of spreading cynicism. He’s also a natural storyteller. What I like most is the cheeky glint in his eye - whether he’s talking about the joys of Eurovision or what’s it like to know that half your audience is only listening because they’re waiting for The Archers.
