Adam Kay is a comedian, musician, writer, and former junior doctor. He fronted the musical comedy act Amateur Transplants alongside fellow doctor Suman Biswas before focusing on writing and solo performances. He is the author of the bestselling and prize-winning This is Going to Hurt, an entertaining, heart-warming and wince-inducing look at NHS life.
Whilst still working as doctors, Adam and Suman became an online hit with their London Underground song, a parody of The Jam’s Going Underground. As well as reaching over four million downloads the duo became a live hit around the country. As a solo performer Adam has continued to perform at festivals and clubs around the UK. His comedy combines dark humour with unexpected insights into the world of healthcare and hospitals and has been described as “bracingly intelligent and enormous fun” by The Times.
Away from the stage, Adam's debut book This is Going to Hurt: Secret Diaries of a Junior Doctor, became an award-winning bestseller translated into twenty languages and adapted for television. Described as "painfully funny, entirely good, entirely noble and entirely loveable' by Stephen Fry, This is Going to Hurt takes a humorous, honest and touching look at 97-hour shifts and the stress, joy, exhaustion, tragedy and weirdness of life as a junior doctor. Adam adapted it into a major comedy-drama for the BBC starring Ben Whishaw.
He followed that success with the seasonal Twas The Nightshift Before Christmas, a look at what 1.4million NHS staff face over the festive period, from the aftermath of parties to decoration-related injuries, and a tribute to those that work tirelessly over the holidays.
His first children's book, Kay's Anatomy, was a Sunday Times number one bestseller, and became the fastest selling children's non-fiction book of the decade. His second children's book, Kay's Marvellous Medicine, was a history of the human body.
His book Undoctored: The story of a medic who ran out of patients, is a portrait of life in and out of medicine. When a doctor hangs up his scrubs, but medicine refuses to let go of him.
Adam has written for comedy shows across BBC TV and is a regular on Radio 4’s The Now Show. He’s worked as an advertising copywriter, and in medicine has written professional texts, as well as acclaimed women’s health features for Cosmopolitan magazine. Adam is also a columnist for The Sunday Times.
