From anarchic turns in The Young Ones and Bottom, Ade has become one of the most popular comic performers in the country. He’s moved in to drama with the likes of Jonathan Creek and War and Peace, and also travels the country in programmes such as Ade in Britain.

Ade Edmondson is one of the best known comic, and more recently dramatic, performers in the country. His career has stretched from The Young Ones to War and Peace, from anarchic comedy to children’s books to visiting the people and places that make the UK what it is.

Starting out on the nascent alternative comedy scene of the 1980s, Ade’s partnership with Rik Mayall saw the pair become one of the must-see acts amongst such names as French & Saunders, Alexi Sayle, Nigel Planer and Robbie Coltrane.

On TV, Ade appeared in the seminal Comic Strip films. As comically violent punk Vyvyan, he and his co-stars in The Young Ones revolutionised sitcoms, reinventing every aspect of performance, writing and production. It also brought his partnership with Rik to television which continued on to Filthy Rich & Catflap, a cameo appearance in Blackadder Goes Forth, and the hugely popular and frequently manic Bottom. The pair also made the Bottom-like film Guest House Paradiso.

Ade appeared in Absolutely Fabulous (with wife Jennifer Saunders) but also moved to more serious roles in the likes of Holby City, Jonathan Creek and the BBC’s blockbuster adaptation of War and Peace. His diversity extends to his stage work, appearing in the West End in Waiting for Godot as well as The Rocky Horror Show.

Away from acting, Ade was a popular Celebrity Masterchef winner. His love of the countryside saw him host The Dales, a journey around his homeland of Yorkshire, and Ade in Britain, in which he visited every county in the UK speaking to the locals, sampling the food and experiencing the surroundings. He repeated the experience in Ade at Sea, travelling around the nation’s coastline.
