Gavin presented Newsnight before moving to The Film Review, Dateline London and HARDtalk. He was previously Chief North America Correspondent at the time of the Lewinsky hearings. He has also written about leadership in Lessons From The Top, and an analysis of English Nationalism in How Britain Ends.


Gavin Esler is an award winning television and radio broadcaster, novelist and journalist. He is best known for serving for over a decade as a main presenter on BBC 2’s Newsnight. He was also a regular anchor on the BBC News Channel and of the BBC’s News at Five.

Gavin previously served as BBC Chief North America Correspondent, in charge of shaping and directing coverage. He was accredited to the White House to cover both Bush and Clinton administrations, including the Lewinsky hearings.

Back in the UK Gavin presented Dateline London, the weekly international news discussion programme, and HARDtalk Extra for BBC World and BBC News Channel, as well as Four Corners for Radio 4. He received a Royal Television Society award for his reports on the military build up in the Aleutian Islands.

The author of a number of books, Gavin has written acclaimed factual titles on leadership (Lessons from the Top), a book on American discontent, The United States of Anger, and on English Nationalism in How Britain Ends.  He also regularly contributes to The Scotsman and The Independent. His novels include Loyalties, Deep Blue, The Blood Brother, A Scandalous Man and Power Play.

We were joined by four fantastic speakers to look ahead at International Women’s Day. With the theme of this year’s event being #InspireInclusion, we were lucky enough to hear from four women who have each blazed a trail in their respective fields: CEO of Channel 4, Alex Mahon; the former Australian Prime Minister and Chair of Kings’ Global Institute of Women’s Leadership, Julia Gillard; one of the leading voices in football, Eniola Aluko MBE; and broadcaster and journalist, Samira Ahmed.
